Foxfirkin Lewisham presents:
Deptford Dub Club: Neville King Special
Entry Requirements: Over 18s only. Photo ID required.
Julys Deptford Dub Club promises to be an historic occasion, as it features the great Neville King on the wheels of steel. The renowned producer was born in St James, Jamaica. Neville’s Soundsystem had long residencies in Brixton, Tooting, Peckham and Streatham during the 1970s. During those times he was a mentor to Blacker Dread, Levi Roots and David Rodigan.
Neville King launched his own label in London in 1976 and quickly struck gold. He issued exceptional roots material by Prince Lincoln and the Royal Rasses and Jacob Miller. The Dub Clubs own Setondji Spirit and Emily played “Love the Way It Should Be” as their first dance at their marriage last year, so Mr. King’s work holds a special place for us. Neville also released his own lover’s rock productions. His works, on the King and City label, by local heroes One Blood are particularly sought after; “Be Thankful” having assumed classic status.
Resident selector Soft Wax will be joined by a host of special guests. On the decks we will be welcoming back club stalwarts RAV Hi Fi, a.k.a. Mikey and Kingsley. Amongst DDC regulars Rebel Audio Visions sets are consistently, hugely enjoyed and our New Year/Christmas shows together have become a favourite fixture in the calendar ( note to self… it’s gonna be an Xmas show this year.) RAV are also regular guests at the esteemed Dub Me Always at The Ritzy, deep in the heart of Brixton and at other venues around town.
As their name suggests, Rebel Audio vision put an emphasis on their visual presentation. Expect full, filmic, wide screen, visual accompaniment to the music. RAVs Mikey remembers buying his first records from Neville King, so it’ll be a night for them to dig deep. Kingsley RAV was the bass player for the Prophecy band, that supported luminaries such as Barrington Levy, back in the day.
In addition to our guest stars, all of the usual D.D.C. massive will be along for this one. Early on Soft Wax will be personing the decks in fine style. He’ll be joined by Nick for his debut selection at The Club. He’s been a regular for years, and he and Debbie are amongst our most stylish dancers. However he’s never selected for us from his collection of foundation tunes; so we’re eagerly anticipating it.
Indeed we expect this to be one of our most memorable sessions. As well as celebrating the career of Neville King, Julys D.D.C. show will also be a Brockwell Park warm-up. Yes indeed the following Sunday is Roots Day at The Lambeth Country Show, so get your mojo working early.
